Structural Repairs to Tower Block, Manchester: 2015-16

 

Project

  • Twenty storey tower block built circa.1960 in the heart of Eccles.
  • Concrete frame construction with a no-fines inner leaf and brick outer leaf supported by reinforced concrete nibs.
  • Extensive remedial structural repairs were required before the installation of external wall insulation (by others).

Solution

  • Structural investigations and testing to establish condition and density of existing wall ties and condition of concrete elements.
  • Installation and testing of remedial cavity wall ties to bring the density up to modern standards.
  • Concrete repairs carried out to damaged concrete elements.
  • Replacement of existing corner nibs with an inverted angle detail following installation of temporary propping system designed and manufactured by Bersche-Rolt in-house.
